Youth, Joy, Cycles of the Vine.
The Divine Youth was the Goddess' partner in creation. He was often known as the "Year King" because his steady, passive role of renewal, ripening, harvest and death presaged the cycle of crop fertility.
Dionysus embodies gentleness and joy. Lord of Grain, Leaf and Vine, he was central to ancient Greek annual ceremonies involving blood sacrifice to ensure crop fertility. He carries the phallic wand, was escorted by maenad priestesses, and wears a panther skin.
