Household Spirits Offer Welcome and Protection.
Along with the Hearth Goddess Vesta, Mercury's twins, the Lars, were the central protecting and welcoming spirit of the Roman household, always shown with raised flagon and bowl.
The twin Lars guarded crossroads, crops and travelers. The original "household gods" central to every hearth shrine.
