Bacchus Dionysus Wine God plaque 8 3/4" x 9 1/2"
Celebrate the Fruits of the Vine.
His laughing, roguish face is surrounded by leaves and grapes.
Roman name for the Greek god Dionysus, Bacchus was the orgiastic deity of bacchanalia, the religious wine festivals held throughout the empire. Satyr plays portraying the regenerative powers of Bacchus/Dionysus gave rise to Greek drama. His phallic staff (thyrsus) crowned by a pine cone represents the human faculties of wisdom and inspiration.
His mount, Scorpio, was the zodiacal sign ascendant during the time of harvest equinox and probably compares to Osiris, the original god of barley brewing and ecstatic intoxication.
8 3/4" x 9 1/2" resin plaque, antique stone color finish. #WGP
