Shiva-Nataraj: The Dancer of Creation
Most famous icon of Hinduism.
Here the androgynous Lord of both joy and sorrow dances the great continuing cycle which symbolizes life's ebb and flow, the intricate balance between form and void.
Surrounded by a whirling flame of cosmic energy, Nataraj tramples upon the demon of spiritual ignorance.
In his upper right hand is held a small twirling drum which hums the rhythm of creation; in his upper left hand is a ball of flame connoting the corollary act of destruction. The lower right hand gestures "Do not be afraid," while the lower left hand points the way out of neurotic bondage, toward the foot raised in freedom above ignorance.
